A 27-year-old woman commando with the Delhi Police SWAT was allegedly beaten to death by her husband in West Delhi, with her brother receiving a chilling phone call moments before the fatal assault.

The victim, Kajal Chaudhary, who was four months pregnant, suffered severe head injuries after being struck with a dumbbell at her residence in Mohan Garden Extension on the night of January 22. She succumbed to her injuries at a hospital in Ghaziabad on January 27.

Brother heard threats and screams

Kajal’s brother, Nikhil — a police constable — said he received a call from her husband, Ankur, during the assault. According to him, Ankur demanded that he record the call, allegedly saying it would serve as “police evidence” before declaring that he was killing Kajal.

Nikhil said he heard his sister screaming before the call abruptly disconnected. Minutes later, Ankur allegedly called again to say she had died and asked the family to come to the hospital.

Dowry harassment allegations

Kajal’s family has accused her husband, mother-in-law and sisters-in-law of persistent dowry harassment. Her father, Rakesh, alleged that despite giving cash, gold jewellery and a Bullet motorcycle at the wedding, the demands continued.

The family claimed Kajal was forced to take loans for her in-laws and was made to do household work even during pregnancy, despite her demanding duty schedule.

Pattern of abuse alleged

According to her brother, Kajal had been assaulted earlier as well. Five months ago, she was allegedly slapped by her husband, who later apologised and promised not to repeat the violence.

The couple, married in November 2023, had a one-and-a-half-year-old son, who is now with his maternal grandparents.

Arrest and investigation

Police arrested Ankur, a clerk with the Ministry of Defence, and registered a murder case. Further investigation is under way.
