Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda addressed the Lok Sabha on Friday regarding concerns raised by an international NGO about higher sugar content in Nestle’s wheat-based baby food sold in India. The NGO alleged that the product exceeded the prescribed limits for added sugar. In response, Nadda stated that the government, through the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), conducted inspections at the manufacturing sites in April. After scrutinizing the product, the FSSAI found that the added sugar content per serving complied with the Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Regulations, 2020.
These regulations are in line with global standards, including those set by the Codex Alimentarius Commission, which follows recommendations from the World Health Organization. Nadda emphasized that the sugar limits for infant food in India are aligned with these international guidelines. This reassurance came as a result of the inspections and investigations carried out, putting to rest concerns about the product’s compliance with health and safety norms.
The clarification from the health minister assures consumers that Nestle’s baby food products meet established standards for infant nutrition, and no violations of the prescribed sugar limits were found.
