The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh warning for Himachal Pradesh, forecasting widespread snowfall and rainfall that is likely to disrupt normal life across the hill state through the weekend.
Western disturbance triggers severe conditions
Officials said a strong western disturbance is active over the region, with intense snowfall and rain expected between January 26 and 28. The season’s first major spell has already led to slippery roads, reduced visibility and long traffic snarls in several districts.
According to the state disaster management authorities, as many as 685 roads are currently blocked across Himachal Pradesh. The worst-hit district is Lahaul and Spiti with 292 road closures, followed by Chamba (132), Mandi (126), Kullu (79), Sirmour (29), Kinnaur (20), Kangra (4), Una (2) and Solan (1).
Manali travel restrictions tightened
In Manali and surrounding areas, the local administration has imposed strict travel restrictions due to icy stretches and poor visibility. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary movement, while tourists have been urged to exercise extreme caution.
Only 4×4 vehicles are being allowed for essential travel in snowbound zones. Traffic moving from Kullu towards Manali is being halted at Patlikuhal, as authorities have declared the stretch ahead unsafe for driving.
Advisory issued, commuters urged caution
The Himachal Pradesh government has issued a statewide advisory asking people to remain indoors unless travel is unavoidable. Social media has been flooded with videos showing vehicles skidding on snow-covered roads, underlining the risk of accidents in the treacherous terrain.
IMD officials have warned that conditions may worsen over the next 48 hours and advised residents, tourists and transporters to follow official updates closely. Emergency services have been placed on alert to deal with any eventuality.
