KARUR: A 30-year-old man with a criminal background sustained a bullet injury to his leg after allegedly attacking police officers during an attempted escape on Wednesday night. He was wanted in connection with an attempted murder case.
The suspect, identified as Tamilarasan, also known by his alias ‘Pencil,’ hails from Chinna Aandankoil in Karur. Authorities revealed he is involved in over 15 criminal cases, including robbery and attempted murder, across Karur and Pudukottai districts.
According to police reports, Tamilarasan, along with associates Prakash, Manoj, and Hariharan, had allegedly assaulted a man using wooden clubs near Lighthouse Corner in Karur on Tuesday. Acting on a tip-off, Karur Town police swiftly reached the location and managed to apprehend Prakash, Hariharan, and Manoj. Tamilarasan, however, escaped from the scene.
Efforts to nab him continued, and on Wednesday night, officers patrolling the Karur-Salem National Highway spotted him hiding near the Arikkarampalayam Road flyover. As police moved in to arrest him, Tamilarasan reportedly brandished a machete and launched an attack on the officers.
In self-defense and to prevent his escape, Inspector Manivannan fired a shot, striking Tamilarasan in his right leg and bringing him down. He was immediately taken into custody and shifted to Karur Government Medical College Hospital for medical treatment.
Further investigation is underway, and security has been tightened around the hospital where he is being treated.
