Prayagraj: A video allegedly showing two female students being assaulted inside a hostel room in Prayagraj has triggered widespread outrage on social media and prompted police action. Authorities registered a case and arrested the accused following a complaint by the students, who alleged repeated harassment and physical assault.
The incident reportedly took place around 2 am at a hostel located in the Shankar Ghat area under Shivkuti police station limits, where the students had been staying while preparing for competitive examinations.
Viral video sparks concern
According to reports, the viral video lasting approximately 30 seconds allegedly shows the hostel owner’s son entering the room and physically assaulting the students.
The footage reportedly shows the accused pulling one of the women by her hair, hitting them and verbally abusing them during the incident.
An elderly woman was also reportedly seen in the video attempting to calm the situation.
The accused has been identified as Shubham Dwivedi.
The authenticity of the video and the complete sequence of events are expected to form part of the ongoing police investigation.
Students allege repeated harassment
According to the complaint filed by the students, the accused had allegedly been harassing them for several days prior to the incident.
One of the students alleged that he had repeatedly attempted to contact her through calls and messages over the previous 10 days.
The women further claimed that the accused first attempted to enter their room on May 18, but they refused to open the door.
According to the allegations, after communication with him was stopped, he allegedly began banging aggressively on the room door.
The students also alleged that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
Allegations of confinement and threats
The complaint further stated that after the women refused to open the door, the accused allegedly locked the room from outside.
One of the students reportedly contacted another woman staying nearby for assistance.
However, the complainants alleged that the accused also locked the other woman’s room from outside.
According to the students, they began shouting for help following which the accused’s mother arrived and the room was opened.
The women alleged that the assault and verbal abuse continued even after that.
One of the victims further claimed that the accused allegedly attacked her using broken glass and threatened to kill her.
The allegation regarding the attack with broken glass will also be examined during the investigation.
Police register case and arrest accused
Police said a First Information Report (FIR) was registered based on the complaint filed by the students.
Authorities subsequently arrested the accused in connection with the case.
Reports stated that he was later granted bail by a local court.
Police are continuing their investigation and are expected to examine witness statements, video footage and other evidence related to the incident.
Further legal proceedings will continue based on the findings of the investigation.
