Kolkata: Nine Bangladeshi nationals were killed and six others injured after a fire broke out at a hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in central Kolkata early Wednesday. The victims had reportedly travelled to the city for medical treatment.
Fire breaks out in the early hours
The blaze reportedly began around 1.45 am, when most guests were asleep. Five fire tenders, along with police and disaster management teams, were deployed for the rescue operation.
Dense smoke made it difficult for firefighters to reach people trapped on the upper floors. Several occupants were rescued, while six injured people were taken to hospital for treatment. The fire was later brought under control.
Victims were in Kolkata for treatment
According to fire department officials, all nine deceased were Bangladeshi citizens who had come to Kolkata for medical care. The victims reportedly included six men, two women and a child.
The Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata has been informed and officials are assisting with identification and coordination concerning the victims and injured.
Cause of fire under investigation
The exact cause of the fire has not yet been established. Preliminary reports have suggested a possible air-conditioner malfunction, but authorities have not confirmed this.
The tragedy comes just days after another deadly hotel fire in West Bengal, prompting renewed concerns about fire-safety arrangements, emergency exits and compliance in hotels and guest houses.
