Once a buzzing centre for small enterprises and utility services, Shewalkar Complex near Mate Chowk in Nagpur is now reeling under the weight of neglect, lawlessness, and anti-social activities. What was once a professional workspace has morphed into a chaotic zone, dominated by open drinking, hookah smoking, and encroachments by food stalls.
An evening visit by TOI revealed the disturbing transformation — groups of youth smoking hookahs and consuming alcohol openly around makeshift food joints. The presence of two beer shops and a smoking parlour nearby has added fuel to the fire, effectively converting the area into a casual drinking hub in full public view.
“This place used to be ideal for client meetings and small businesses,” said a long-time office employee. “Now we walk through garbage, beer bottles, and cigarette butts every morning. It’s embarrassing and unprofessional.”
Shopkeepers, too, are feeling the heat. One grocery store worker recounted a conflict over parking space with a food stall owner, which escalated enough to involve the police and municipal officials. Though the stall was initially removed, the vendor returned by acquiring a unit inside the complex and now runs a full-fledged restaurant. His patrons, however, crowd the walkways and parking spots, inconveniencing regular office-goers and customers.
Overflowing trash bins, poor sanitation, and unchecked vendor activity have further dented the complex’s image. Local business owners have urged the Nagpur Municipal Corporation and the police to act — from enforcing cleanliness to cracking down on public drinking and illegal setups.
Rana Pratap Nagar police inspector Pankaj Bondse said no official complaints have been received so far but assured that his team will inspect the premises and take action if necessary.
