A sophisticated scam is emerging in India where fraudsters are extorting money by threatening victims with fake SIM card issues. The latest victim, a 31-year-old Hyderabad resident, lost Rs 11.20 lakh after scammers, posing as TRAI officials, claimed his SIM card was linked to criminal activity.

The scam began with a call from someone alleging that the victim’s mobile number was at risk of being blocked due to illegal use. The caller claimed that a SIM card issued in his name was involved in a harassment case with Mumbai Police. To make the scam appear authentic, the fraudsters routed the call to what they said was the Mumbai Police via Skype. The so-called officials accused the victim of money laundering linked to Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal and threatened arrest unless he submitted his bank details for Supreme Court inspection.

Under pressure, the victim transferred Rs 11.20 lakh in two instalments. The scam was revealed when the fraudsters demanded an additional Rs 2 lakh, raising the victim’s suspicions. He reported the scam to Hyderabad Cyber Crime police, who are now investigating.

To avoid similar scams, verify the authenticity of callers, be wary of urgent financial requests, and never share sensitive information over the phone. Report suspicious activity to local authorities immediately.

How to Stay Safe from SIM Card Scams:

  1. Verify the authenticity of callers requesting personal or financial information.
  2. Official bodies like TRAI or police do not request sensitive details over the phone.
  3. Avoid making hasty decisions under pressure; consult trusted individuals.
  4. Protect your personal, banking, and sensitive information from unknown callers.
  5. Report suspicious calls to local police or cybercrime units promptly.
