Hyderabad police have arrested three individuals, including a couple from Andhra Pradesh, for the kidnapping of a month-old baby boy from the Niloufer Hospital for children. The child was abducted on Saturday evening but was safely rescued early Sunday morning in Jogu Lamba Gadwal district, while the kidnappers were en route to Andhra Pradesh.
The couple, originally from Anantapur district, was desperate for a male child and kidnapped the baby with the help of a relative. The baby’s mother, Haseena Begum, 27, had brought the child to Niloufer Hospital for treatment of jaundice after his birth in Zaheerabad on October 25. As Haseena and her mother were signing discharge papers, a woman wearing a burka approached them and offered to assist with the formalities. She distracted them long enough to steal the baby and flee.
Upon discovering the kidnapping, Haseena filed a complaint with the Nampally Police Station, which quickly formed five teams to locate the child. Police traced the suspects through CCTV footage and learned they were headed towards Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. With assistance from local authorities, police intercepted the suspects’ vehicle at the Pullur Toll Plaza, where they found the baby and arrested the kidnappers.
The accused have been identified as Shaheen Begum, Abdulla alias Venkatesh, and his wife Reshma alias Renuka. Abdulla and Reshma, parents of three daughters, had been trying for a male child. Fearing the birth of another girl, they planned the abduction with Shaheen’s help. The police have confirmed the baby’s identity and returned him to his family.
