HYDERABAD – A 20-year-old student from Yakutpura was deceived by cyber fraudsters impersonating a well-known YouTuber, losing ₹4.2 lakh over 45 days.
The ordeal began in December 2024 when she received a WhatsApp call from a man claiming to be a UK-based influencer. Initially doubtful, she was convinced after verifying his online presence. The fraudster expressed romantic interest and promised extravagant gifts, including gold, diamonds, and an iPhone 14 Pro.
Shortly after, a second caller, posing as a courier agent, informed her that the parcel had arrived but required clearance fees. Trusting them, she paid multiple charges, such as courier registration, security tax, and agency tax. To arrange the money, she pawned her mother’s jewellery, sold her own gold, and borrowed heavily from relatives.
Only after sinking deep into debt did she realise she had been conned. Hyderabad cybercrime police have launched an investigation into the case. Officials urge the public to remain cautious against online scams and verify any financial requests.
