Quick action by local residents helped ensure the safety of two Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots after a microlite aircraft made an emergency landing in a sparsely populated area near Prayagraj on Wednesday following a technical malfunction.
Technical snag mid-sortie
According to the Indian Air Force, the two-seater microlite aircraft was on a routine training sortie from Air Force Station Bamrauli when it developed a technical snag mid-flight.
In a post on X, the IAF said the pilots executed a controlled force landing in an uninhabited area around 12.15 pm, ensuring there was no damage to civilian life or property.
“The aircraft experienced a technical malfunction and was safely force-landed, averting any harm,” the statement said.
Locals rush to help
Moments after the aircraft landed in a pond near K P College in the George Town police station area, residents from nearby localities rushed to the site. A video that later went viral showed the two pilots, still in uniform, walking safely towards the shore with locals escorting them.
The swift response from civilians, along with assistance from fire brigade personnel, helped complete the rescue operation smoothly.
Pilots safe, inquiry ordered
The IAF confirmed that both pilots are safe and have not suffered any injuries. Standard recovery procedures have been initiated, and a Court of Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the exact cause of the technical issue.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (City) Manish Shandilya said the pilots demonstrated skill and composure in executing a safe landing under challenging circumstances.

The incident drew widespread praise on social media, with many users lauding the prompt help extended by local residents. Comments highlighted the spirit of cooperation and humanity displayed during the emergency.
Authorities reiterated that there was no threat to public safety and thanked citizens for their calm and responsible conduct.
