A 30-year-old junior technician at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur allegedly died by suicide inside campus accommodation on Saturday, police officials said.

The woman had been working with IIT Kanpur’s Information Technology department for the past three years. According to police, the incident came to light after colleagues grew concerned when she failed to respond to repeated phone calls.

Colleagues discover body

When colleagues reached her room within the campus quarters, they reportedly found her hanging from the ceiling. Personnel from the Kalyanpur police station and a forensic team arrived shortly thereafter to collect evidence and examine the scene.

Investigators recovered a diary and several handwritten notes from the room. These documents have been sent for handwriting analysis as part of the ongoing probe.

Emotional distress suspected

Preliminary findings suggest that the woman may have been under emotional stress. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) SM Qasim Abidi said initial inquiry indicates that she had a verbal argument with her fiancé shortly before the incident.

“While the primary cause appears to be mental stress arising from personal and family matters, we are examining her call records and the recovered notes to establish the sequence of events,” the officer said.

The IIT Kanpur administration expressed deep grief over the loss and stated that it is fully cooperating with the authorities in the investigation.

Police said no formal complaint has been lodged by the family so far. Further legal proceedings are underway as officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

If you or someone you know is struggling emotionally, it is important to seek help from trusted family members, friends or professional support services.
