IIT Madras director’s gomutra claims spark controversy

The remarks made by IIT Madras Director, Kamakoti, during an event at a Go Samrakshana Sala in Chennai have sparked widespread criticism. In a video that surfaced online, Kamakoti allegedly endorsed the “anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and digestive properties” of gomutra (cow urine), claiming it is beneficial for conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome. He also shared an anecdote about a sanyasi who supposedly consumed cow urine to treat a high fever.

The authenticity of the video could not be independently verified by Hindustan Times, but sources from the institution confirmed that Kamakoti made the remarks, which were part of his address at the Goshala event where he spoke as an “organic farmer.”

The IIT Madras director’s comments have sparked backlash, especially from political figures. Congress leader Karti P Chidambaram criticized Kamakoti, accusing him of “peddling pseudoscience” and tagging the Indian Medical Association in his post. Similarly, DMK leader TKS Elangovan called for Kamakoti’s transfer from IIT Madras, questioning his suitability for the role given the institution’s focus on engineering and technical fields. Elangovan suggested Kamakoti be reassigned to a medical institution like AIIMS instead.

The incident has fueled debates over the intersection of science, traditional beliefs, and the role of academic leaders in public discourse.
