A 21-year-old BTech student of Indian Institute of Technology Ropar died after his health suddenly deteriorated while exercising at the institute’s gym, triggering shock and grief across the campus.
The deceased has been identified as Aditya, a third-year Civil Engineering student and a native of Hapur district in Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred on January 6 during a routine workout session at the IIT Ropar gym.
Sudden collapse during workout
According to initial information, Aditya collapsed while exercising, with sources stating that blood was seen oozing from his ear moments before he lost consciousness. Security personnel and fellow students immediately rushed him in an ambulance to the IIT medical centre, from where he was referred to Ropar Civil Hospital.
Doctors at the civil hospital declared him brought dead.
Medical officials indicated that a brain haemorrhage could be the possible cause of death, though the exact reason will be confirmed only after the post-mortem report.
Police confirm probe
Ropar Sadar SHO Sunny Khanna confirmed the incident, stating that while doctors have pointed towards a brain haemorrhage, the post-mortem findings will provide clarity. Police said all medico-legal formalities were completed before handing over the body to the family.
Officials added that all aspects, including the student’s recent health condition and gym activity, are being examined. Further action, if required, will be based on the medico-legal report.
Campus in mourning
The IIT Ropar administration expressed deep sorrow over the untimely death, describing Aditya as a bright and promising student who had secured admission through the Joint Entrance Examination. Institute officials said all possible assistance was extended to the bereaved family, who reached Rupnagar soon after being informed.
Counselling support has also been arranged for students affected by the tragedy.
Calls for better medical preparedness
The incident has renewed concerns over health screening and emergency preparedness in educational institutions. Student groups and parents have urged colleges to strengthen on-campus emergency response systems, conduct regular medical check-ups and enforce safer exercise protocols at campus gyms to prevent similar tragedies.
Aditya’s mortal remains were later taken to his native place, where last rites were performed in a sombre atmosphere.
