THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Six months after the grand inauguration of the Venjaramoodu flyover, construction work hasn’t even begun, frustrating daily commuters and residents. Not a single brick has been laid at the congested MC Road junction, with officials blaming bureaucratic delays—particularly the failure to shift overhead electric lines and remove power poles from the project site.
The ₹multi-crore project, entrusted to Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS), was expected to ease severe traffic snarls between Thiruvananthapuram and Kottarakkara, especially at the accident-prone four-way intersection. However, the PWD says work can’t proceed until KSEB completes utility shifting, including underground cabling.
“We are waiting for KSEB to call a tender for the utility shifting,” said a senior PWD official, who confirmed that even piling and excavation work is on hold.
Locals, caught in daily traffic jams, are exasperated. “They inaugurated with fanfare. Now it’s just barricades and dust,” said Sunitha Raj, a teacher commuting from Kilimanoor.
MLA D K Murali assured that the issue is being addressed and that utility work will begin within two weeks. However, PWD and KSEB remain tangled in delays over funding and clearances, and no definitive construction start date has been provided.
Meanwhile, the junction continues to choke under peak-hour traffic, and public frustration is mounting over what many see as a symbol of empty promises.
