India bans 16 Pakistani YouTube channels over Pahalgam attack content
In a strong move following the Pahalgam terror attack, India has banned 16 Pakistani YouTube channels with a combined 63 million subscribers for spreading provocative and communally sensitive content. The channels, including those of major news outlets like Dawn, Samaa TV, ARY News, and Geo News, have been blocked on the recommendations of the Union Home Ministry.
The banned channels are accused of disseminating false and inflammatory narratives, often targeting India, its military, and security agencies, particularly after the tragic Pahalgam attack in which 25 tourists and a local Kashmiri were killed by terrorists. The government’s action aims to curb the spread of misinformation in the wake of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan.
When users attempt to access these banned channels, they are greeted with a notification stating, “This content is currently unavailable in this country because of an order from the government related to national security or public order.”
This ban comes as part of India’s broader response to the attack, including suspending the Indus Water Treaty and visa services for Pakistani nationals. In retaliation, Pakistan has suspended all bilateral pacts with India, including the Simla Agreement.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged severe retribution for those behind the attack, emphasizing that India’s resolve will never waver. Additionally, the Indian government has raised concerns with the BBC over a misleading headline related to the attack, prompting scrutiny of its coverage.
