India is dispatching over 15 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Myanmar, which recently suffered a devastating earthquake, leaving at least 144 dead and more than 700 injured. The relief shipment includes vital supplies such as tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat food, water purifiers, hygiene kits, solar lamps, generators, and essential medicines like paracetamol, antibiotics, syringes, gloves, and bandages, ANI reported, citing sources.

The Indian Embassy is actively monitoring the situation and has confirmed that no Indian citizens have been harmed so far. “Following strong tremors felt in Bangkok and other regions of Thailand, the Embassy is closely coordinating with Thai authorities. No adverse incidents involving Indian nationals have been reported. In case of emergencies, Indians in Thailand can reach the emergency helpline at +66 618819218,” the Embassy stated on X.

Myanmar recorded six earthquakes on Friday, according to the National Center for Seismology. The nation remains highly prone to seismic activity due to the ongoing collision of the Eurasian and Indo-Australian tectonic plates. Despite this, Myanmar lacks an official national seismic hazard map.

Data from the International Seismological Centre shows that between 1990 and 2019, an average of 140 earthquakes with magnitudes above 3.0 occurred annually in Myanmar and surrounding areas. This underlines the country’s susceptibility to both moderate and high-magnitude quakes, as well as potential tsunami threats along its extensive coastline.
