India on Monday strongly criticised Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif after he questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi receiving Seychelles’ highest civilian honour. Government sources described Asif’s remarks as “mentally unstable” and accused him of making irresponsible statements aimed at drawing attention away from Pakistan’s domestic challenges.
The diplomatic exchange comes shortly after Prime Minister Modi was conferred the Guardian of the Blue Horizon award by the government of Seychelles in recognition of his contributions to environmental conservation, sustainable development and maritime cooperation.
India rejects Pakistan’s criticism
Reacting to Asif’s comments, Indian government sources dismissed his remarks as baseless and said the honour awarded to the Prime Minister reflected India’s growing global stature and its commitment to strengthening international partnerships.
Officials maintained that the award was an independent recognition by Seychelles and should not be politicised through unnecessary remarks.
Seychelles recognises environmental leadership
The Guardian of the Blue Horizon award honours efforts towards protecting marine ecosystems, promoting climate resilience and advancing sustainable development. During his visit, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting island nations through development partnerships and environmental initiatives.
The recognition adds to the list of international honours conferred on the Prime Minister by foreign governments over the years.
Diplomatic tensions continue
The latest exchange highlights the continuing strain in relations between India and Pakistan. While Pakistan questioned the significance of the honour, Indian officials reiterated that international recognition earned through bilateral cooperation should remain above political rhetoric.
The verbal sparring comes amid already tense diplomatic ties between the two neighbouring countries, with both sides continuing to exchange criticism on various regional and international issues
