Following reports of another Indian national’s death while serving in the Russian army, the Indian government has raised the issue with Russian authorities. A Kerala man, employed by a Russian military support service, was killed on Monday in the ongoing conflict. A relative of the deceased was also injured.
The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement confirming the incident. “We have learned of the unfortunate death of an Indian national from Kerala, recruited to serve in the Russian Army. Another individual from Kerala, similarly enlisted, has been injured and is receiving medical treatment in Moscow,” the ministry stated, offering condolences to the family.
The Indian government assured that the embassy in Moscow is actively assisting the families involved, including facilitating the repatriation of the deceased’s remains to India. They also called for the immediate repatriation of the injured individual. “The matter has been strongly raised with Russian authorities both in Moscow and through the Russian Embassy in New Delhi. We have reiterated our demand for the early discharge of the remaining Indian nationals,” the statement added.
Last month, the Indian government informed Parliament that 19 Indian nationals were still serving in the Russian armed forces. The government also highlighted that eight Indians had died in service up until August 2024. India has urged Russian authorities to provide updates on the remaining Indian nationals’ status and ensure their safety and early discharge.
