Rohit Walia, executive chairman and CEO of investment banking advisory firm Alpen Capital, passed away at his residence in Dubai on January 17, a day before a major musical event hosted annually by his company. He was 65
Walia, an Indian-origin banker and entrepreneur, was the founder of Alpen Capital, which he established in 2005. His sudden demise has been widely mourned across the financial and cultural communities in the UAE and beyond.
Tribute at Global Fusion event
Walia’s death came just a day before Global Fusion, a signature cultural event organised by Alpen Capital in Dubai. Despite the sombre circumstances, the event went ahead as scheduled, with artistes and guests paying heartfelt tributes to the late banker.
Several Grammy-winning artistes performed at the event, including Indian-American vocalist and entrepreneur Chandrika Tandon, who is the elder sister of former PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi.
South African flautist Wouter Kellerman, a three-time Grammy Award winner, described Global Fusion as Walia’s “heart and soul”, noting that celebrating music on stage felt like honouring his spirit through the art form he deeply loved.
Alpen Capital announces interim leadership
Confirming his death, Alpen Capital issued a statement expressing profound grief over the loss of its founder and leader. The company described Walia as an extraordinary banker, visionary businessman and a compassionate human being who served as a guiding force to his colleagues.
Following his passing, Alpen Capital appointed TM Lakshmanan as interim CEO to ensure continuity of leadership.
Remembered as leader and family man
Beyond his professional achievements, Walia was remembered as a devoted father, grandfather and family man. His family recently organised a condolence meeting at the Waldorf Astoria in Dubai International Financial Centre, attended by business leaders, friends and well-wishers.
