Killing reported at Illinois family home

A 28-year-old Indian-origin man, Abhijit Patel, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder after his father was found dead at their family residence in Illinois over the Thanksgiving weekend. The incident reportedly occurred on November 29.

Police said the victim, 67-year-old Anupam Patel, was discovered unresponsive in his bedroom with severe head injuries. He was later pronounced dead. A sledgehammer, believed to be the weapon used in the crime, was found near the bed.

Accused surrenders to police

Abhijit Patel surrendered himself to law enforcement shortly after the incident. During court proceedings, authorities informed the judge that he has a documented history of mental health issues and had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia.

He had reportedly undergone hospitalisation for psychiatric treatment in the past. At the time of the incident, he was under restrictions that barred him from contacting his father, following earlier alleged threats to kill him.

Disturbing claims and past behaviour

According to police records cited in court, Abhijit Patel told investigators that he believed it was his “religious duty” to kill his father. He also claimed that his father had abused him during childhood. These statements are now part of the ongoing investigation.

Court documents further revealed that Abhijit had exhibited troubling behaviour earlier as well. He was reportedly banned from the University of Illinois Chicago campus after making alarming comments on social media and group chats in November 2024. University authorities had asked for a psychiatric evaluation before allowing his return.

Wife raises alarm after health app alert

Reports indicate that Anupam Patel was diabetic and regularly shared his blood sugar readings with his wife through a mobile application. On the day of the incident, she did not receive the usual update.

While at work, she reportedly became anxious after noticing his glucose levels dropping on the app. When repeated calls went unanswered, she returned home. There, she encountered her son, who allegedly told her to check on his father, saying, “I have taken care of him.”

Case highlights mental health concerns

The case has once again drawn attention to the complex intersection of mental illness, family safety, and early intervention. Authorities have not commented on whether Abhijit was receiving active treatment at the time of the incident.

The investigation is ongoing, and Abhijit Patel remains in custody as legal proceedings continue.
