A 35-year-old Indian student pursuing higher education in the United States has passed away after battling for weeks in a comatose state following a road accident, leaving behind a story of resilience, loss, and compassion.
Accident and prolonged medical struggle
Nilam Shinde, a final-year MS engineering student at California State University, was critically injured in a road accident on February 14 while on a routine walk in California.
The accident occurred just days after the first death anniversary of her mother, adding emotional weight to the tragedy. Nilam was admitted to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, where she remained in a coma for over a month.
Family’s struggle to reach her
Her father, Tanaji Shinde, faced difficulties obtaining a visa to travel to the United States. Following intervention by Supriya Sule, he was able to secure the necessary documents and travel to be by his daughter’s side.
After staying for two months, he returned to India upon visa expiry, entrusting her care to relatives residing in the US, who continued visiting her regularly.
Passing and organ donation decision
On March 28, the hospital informed the family that Nilam had passed away. Despite personal grief and logistical challenges, her father made a selfless decision to donate her organs.
With his consent, her skin and corneas were donated, potentially benefiting multiple patients in need.
Funeral held with Hindu rituals
Her funeral was conducted at Mount Vernon Memorial Park in California, following Hindu rituals, with relatives and friends gathering to pay their last respects.
Due to ongoing global challenges and personal health issues, her father was unable to travel again to attend the final rites.
A life of promise and achievement
Nilam had completed her Bachelor’s degree in computer science from Sinhgad Institute in Pune and had also undertaken a one-year internship with NASA.
She was in the final phase of her MS programme, with aspirations for a promising career in engineering.
A story of loss and legacy
Her untimely death has left her family and community in deep sorrow. At the same time, her organ donation stands as a powerful reminder of compassion and humanity in the face of tragedy.
