Mumbai, August 27, 2026: Construction of India’s first bullet train corridor is gathering pace, with significant progress reported on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project across Maharashtra’s Thane and Palghar districts.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently highlighted progress on the 135.45-km elevated stretch between Shilphata in Thane and Zaroli near the Maharashtra-Gujarat border.

Over 100 km of piers completed

According to the National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL), more than 100 km of pier construction has been completed on the stretch, while nearly 74 km of piers are ready for viaduct girder installation.

Of the corridor’s total length in Maharashtra, 124.027 km will comprise viaducts and bridges, underlining the scale of the engineering work involved.

Three stations taking shape

Construction is also progressing on three elevated stations at Thane, Virar and Boisar.

The Thane station has been designed with its concourse around 12 metres above ground level. The elevated design is intended to reduce the project’s impact on nearby mangrove ecosystems in the environmentally sensitive area.

Tunnels and bridges advance

Tunnelling work has also moved forward, with three of the seven planned mountain tunnels on the Maharashtra section recording breakthroughs. Drainage, waterproofing and tunnel-lining work is now underway in these completed sections.

The route will also feature several major bridges, including a 460-metre bridge over the Ulhas River, a 2.32-km bridge across the Vaitarna River and a 510-metre bridge over the Jagani River.

Overall, the Maharashtra section will include 36 bridges and crossings, including 12 steel bridges spanning major railway lines, highways and rivers.

Project aims to transform high-speed travel

Nine casting yards, seven full-span launching gantries and eight segmental launching gantries are currently operational across Maharashtra to support construction.

The 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor will connect Mumbai with Ahmedabad using high-speed rail technology. The first operational section in Gujarat has been targeted for commissioning in 2027, while construction continues across the wider corridor.
