Police in Ludhiana have registered a case against a social media influencer on charges of allegedly spreading false information and uploading a video of an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator without consent.
The FIR was lodged at Sahnewal police station following a complaint by Vishal, a supporter of Rajinderpal Kaur Chhina, the AAP MLA from Ludhiana South constituency.
Sections invoked under IT Act and BNS
According to police, Section 67 of the Information Technology Act (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) and Section 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (publication or circulation of false information causing public mischief or inciting communal hatred) have been invoked.
The complainant alleged that influencer Mandeep Singh Duggal uploaded a video of the MLA on Facebook without her permission and made baseless allegations aimed at tarnishing her reputation.
Officials said that several satirical and critical posts shared by the influencer had drawn objections from the ruling party. These posts reportedly targeted the AAP government and its leaders and were termed misleading and defamatory.
MLA Chhina stated that the accused had repeatedly made personal remarks against her and had also criticised Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on social media. She said the case was registered after a three-month examination of the content.
Accused denies wrongdoing
The accused, however, denied the allegations, claiming he had not been formally informed by the police and had learnt about the FIR through media reports. He maintained that he had not intentionally defamed anyone.
Sahnewal SHO Inspector Amritpal Singh confirmed that the case has been registered and that further action will be taken after investigation.
Earlier, on December 12, 2025, the Ludhiana cyber crime police had also registered an FIR against several individuals over allegedly misleading social media content related to the use of a helicopter associated with the Punjab Chief Minister.
