India and Italy are enhancing their strategic and defence relationship through high-level engagements, joint projects, and technological partnerships. Matteo Perego di Cremnago, the Italian Under-Secretary for Defence, and Ambassador Antonio Bartoli emphasized the importance of co-production and technology transfer in their collaboration, moving beyond mere product sales. Perego di Cremnago stated that this approach aligns with India’s goals of self-reliance in defence manufacturing, particularly in emerging technologies.
Italy views India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative as a key avenue for closer technological cooperation, especially in areas like artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and cyber security. Recognizing Bengaluru’s thriving defence-tech startup ecosystem, Perego di Cremnago highlighted the city’s potential as a hub for collaboration. To foster deeper research ties, Italy will soon deploy a scientific attaché in Bengaluru.
Ambassador Bartoli echoed the sentiment, noting the shared challenges and mutual goals in modernization and innovation. He stressed that collaboration between Italy’s SMEs and India’s startups could lead to the development of next-generation defence technologies.
