Gurugram, Haryana: In a significant step towards enabling seamless and barrier-free toll collection on Indian highways, Jio Payments Bank Limited (JPBL), a subsidiary of Jio Financial Services Limited (JFSL), has been awarded a major contract to implement the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)-based Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system across two key toll plazas — Shahjahanpur and Manoharpura — located between Gurugram and Jaipur. The project forms part of India’s ambitious pilot MLFF initiative, spearheaded by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).
Seamless tolling for faster travel
The MLFF system, aimed at revolutionising India’s highway tolling landscape, will eliminate the need for vehicles to slow down or stop at toll booths. Using RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification), ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition), DSRC (Dedicated Short-Range Communication), and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) technologies, JPBL’s solution will enable vehicles to be automatically identified and charged electronically as they pass through designated tolling zones.
This advancement marks a shift from the current FASTag-based hybrid tolling system to a fully automated, free-flow model, significantly reducing congestion, travel time, and fuel consumption on busy corridors such as the Delhi–Jaipur Expressway.
Government’s vision for barrier-free highways
The IHMCL-led pilot is part of the central government’s larger vision to introduce nationwide MLFF tolling, ensuring frictionless movement on India’s rapidly expanding expressway network. Once implemented, the MLFF system will integrate with existing digital tolling frameworks, strengthening the country’s road infrastructure and enabling smoother interstate travel.
With five MLFF contracts awarded nationally so far, Jio Payments Bank has secured two, underscoring its growing influence in the digital tolling and infrastructure-linked payments ecosystem.
Leveraging Jio’s digital ecosystem
JPBL currently manages toll operations across 11 toll plazas nationwide and plans to build upon its expertise by leveraging Jio Platforms’ advanced digital infrastructure. This includes data analytics, cloud computing, and real-time transaction processing capabilities that will power the MLFF tolling solution.
Vinod Easwaran, Managing Director and CEO of Jio Payments Bank, expressed confidence in the company’s ability to deliver technology-led mobility solutions.
“Our expansion into the tolling ecosystem is a natural progression of our mission to digitise everyday payments and build smart financial infrastructure at scale. This milestone reflects our commitment to citizen-centric financial services and inclusion,” Easwaran said.
Strengthening India’s digital mobility framework
The successful rollout of MLFF tolling will represent a major milestone for India’s Digital India and Gati Shakti missions, both aimed at enhancing connectivity and improving logistics efficiency. The initiative will also aid in better traffic management, enhanced safety, and reduced carbon emissions due to lower idling time at toll plazas.
Industry experts believe that the adoption of MLFF systems will open new opportunities in the fintech and mobility sectors, with banks and technology providers collaborating closely with infrastructure authorities.
