The State Disaster Response Force Jammu and Kashmir (SDRF) recorded a year of sustained preparedness and extensive field activity in 2025, carrying out over 110 rescue operations and training more than 55,000 citizens across the Kashmir Valley.
Official data shows the force also organised 768 disaster awareness programmes across districts, focusing on first aid, search and rescue, fire safety and emergency response, even in the absence of major natural calamities.
Wide-ranging rescue operations
Throughout 2025, SDRF personnel responded to multiple emergencies, including fires, floods, snow rescues and a landslide. Officials confirmed responses to 14 fire incidents and one landslide, rescuing at least five lives during the year.
A major deployment was seen during the Amarnath Ji Yatra, where SDRF teams assisted over 15,000 pilgrims during the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra (SANJY), particularly in August, the peak pilgrimage month.
Month-wise surge in activity
The highest operational intensity was recorded in September, with 33 rescue operations, including 14 flood rescues and two animal assists. August saw 22 rescue operations alongside large-scale SANJY duties, while July and May also witnessed increased activity linked to seasonal risks and fire preparedness.
January to November data highlights consistent engagement, with awareness programmes ranging from 46 to 88 per month and participant numbers peaking at 8,983 in September.
Focus on training and awareness
In total, the SDRF conducted 746 awareness programmes, sensitising 55,955 citizens. The highest participation was recorded in September, followed by May and July. Training sessions were held in schools, panchayats, hospitals and along pilgrim routes, including sessions for medical students at GMC Srinagar.
An SDRF official said the emphasis in 2025 was on building community capacity. “Preparedness is a daily discipline. We prioritise training at every level, even without major disasters,” the official noted.
Awards recognise service excellence
Several SDRF officers and personnel received commendations during the year. Masroor Ahmad Mir (JKPS), Commandant, SDRF 1st Battalion Srinagar, was awarded the DGP’s Golden Disc and the National Disaster Response Force Director General’s Commendation Disc.
Officials said the honours reflect strong inter-agency coordination and humanitarian efficiency.
Looking ahead
The SDRF plans to expand early warning systems, mock drills and climate-adaptive response strategies in 2026, reinforcing its emphasis on preparedness over panic.
