A 44-year-old man from Thungapara in Kattakada reportedly died by suicide on Thursday morning, allegedly after years of financial distress linked to job scams that left his family shattered.
Mounting debts and broken promises
Police identified the deceased as Pramod, who was found hanging inside his residence. According to officials, he had tea with his wife shortly before taking the extreme step.
Family members told police that Pramod had paid nearly ₹10 lakh to a person who promised to secure him employment in Canada. He also allegedly paid ₹3 lakh to another individual who assured him of a job in a cooperative bank. Despite waiting for almost five years, neither the overseas job nor the bank position materialised, and the money was not returned.
In the hope of building a better future, Pramod had taken multiple loans, including borrowing through a chit fund. As repayment deadlines approached and recovery threats intensified, he reportedly suffered severe mental stress.
He is survived by his wife Anju and daughter Ananya, a Class VII student.
The Kerala Police said the Kattakada Police Station conducted an inquest and shifted the body to the Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram for post-mortem examination. Further investigation is under way.
