Hyderabad
A day after being suspended from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) for alleged anti-party activities, K Kavitha, daughter of party supremo K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), resigned from both the party and her position as Member of the Legislative Council (MLC). In an emotional press conference on September 3, 2025, Kavitha claimed she was the victim of a conspiracy orchestrated by senior party leaders and expressed disappointment over the silence of her brother, K. T. Rama Rao (KTR).
Suspension sparks turmoil
On September 2, 2025, Kavitha was suspended from the BRS following internal complaints that her actions and statements were damaging the party’s image. The suspension was formally approved by party president KCR. Her removal came days after she accused her cousins, senior leaders T. Harish Rao and J. Santosh Kumar, of manipulating narratives about corruption in the Kaleshwaram irrigation project to weaken her father’s standing.
Tearful resignation
A day later, Kavitha announced her resignation from both her MLC seat and the party. Addressing the media in Hyderabad, she broke down, saying her decision was guided by her commitment to democratic values. She alleged that her ouster was not merely disciplinary action but part of a larger conspiracy to sideline her.
Kavitha said she felt abandoned within her own family, particularly criticising her brother KTR for failing to defend her while a “malicious campaign” was being run against her. She appealed to her father to closely examine those around him, warning that vested interests were harming the party.
Allegations against senior leaders
In her address, Kavitha directly accused her cousin T. Harish Rao of being a “conspirator” rather than a “troubleshooter” for the party. She also implicated another cousin, J. Santosh Kumar, in orchestrating her downfall. According to her, both leaders worked in tandem to engineer her suspension and weaken her influence within the party.
Her criticism of KTR, however, carried the most emotional weight. Kavitha said his silence during the crisis was a form of betrayal, as she had expected him to stand by her against what she called a “manufactured smear campaign.”
Party rift widens
Kavitha’s resignation has exposed deep fissures in the BRS. The departure of a key family member highlights tensions within the founding family of the party, which has ruled Telangana since its formation until the last state election setback. Political observers believe this is the most serious internal crisis for the BRS since its inception.
While some leaders view Kavitha’s exit as an isolated act of rebellion, others fear it may trigger further discontent within the party ranks. Her accusations against top leaders have intensified speculation about a larger power struggle brewing inside the party.
Implications for Telangana politics
The sudden turn of events has cast uncertainty over the BRS’s internal stability and its future strategy. Kavitha’s resignation may impact the party’s image at a time when it is attempting to recover from electoral setbacks and reassert its relevance in Telangana’s political landscape.
Analysts suggest that if Kavitha floats a new platform or takes a more active political role outside the BRS, it could split the party’s traditional support base. At the same time, her accusations against Harish Rao and Santosh Kumar have deepened suspicions of factionalism within the party, which could weaken BRS unity ahead of future elections.
Conclusion
K Kavitha’s resignation marks a dramatic chapter in the ongoing turbulence within the BRS. By openly accusing close family members of betrayal and conspiracy, she has not only distanced herself from the party but also brought to light the growing divisions within the leadership. Whether this episode leads to a permanent fracture or compels the party to reassess its internal dynamics remains to be seen.
