At an age when many prefer routine and rest, Hashim VP, a 67-year-old sugarcane juice seller from Kannur district in Kerala, has scripted an inspiring story of passion, perseverance and global exploration. For over 30 years, Hashim has run a modest sugarcane juice stall, but his love for travel has taken him far beyond his hometown — across 10 countries in Asia and the Middle East.

According to news agency ANI, Hashim’s journey as a traveller began in 2012, when he made his first trip to Delhi during the off-season months of June and July. Those months, he said, were usually quiet for business, and he would typically shut his shop and rest at home. However, a conversation with his elder brother that year proved life-changing.

A conversation that changed everything

Hashim recalled that his brother encouraged him to use his time and savings to explore the world instead of staying idle. That advice ignited a spark. “From then on, I decided not to stop myself from travelling whenever I could,” he said.

What started as a domestic trip soon turned into an international journey of discovery. Over the years, Hashim has travelled to Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Malaysia, Thailand, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia — often accompanied by his wife, Haseena.

Travelling beyond age and profession

Speaking about his experiences, Hashim said each destination offered a chance to learn about new cultures, people and histories. His most recent trip was to Turkey, which he described as “beautiful”.

“I have travelled to 10 countries so far. The last trip I did was to Turkey. Now, after three months, I’m planning to visit China,” Hashim told ANI, adding that his upcoming journey will be with his wife and elder brother.

Despite running a small business, Hashim said careful planning and discipline helped him save for travel. He continues to manage his shop while ensuring he sets aside time and resources to pursue his passion.

An inspiring message

Hashim’s story has resonated widely, especially among senior citizens and small business owners, showing that age, profession or background need not limit one’s dreams. His journey stands as a reminder that curiosity and determination can open doors at any stage of life.

“Once I started travelling, I never wanted to stop,” Hashim said, smiling. For many, his life is proof that dreams, when nurtured patiently, can indeed become reality.
