A 51-year-old retired Army personnel and Kargil war veteran allegedly shot his wife and 16-year-old son at their residence before dying by suicide on a nearby railway track, police said on Monday.

The incident came to light after authorities were alerted about a body found on the railway track near the Kathogar-Imlipur underpass. The deceased was identified as Chetram Paswan through an Aadhaar card recovered from his pocket. A motorcycle parked nearby led police to his home in Nai Basti locality.

Wife and son found dead at home

When officers reached the residence to inform the family, they discovered the bodies of Paswan’s wife, Sunita Verma (40), and their son, Deep (16), inside the house.

Police said Sunita was found near the bed with a gunshot wound to her head, while Deep was found near the bedroom entrance with a bullet injury to his chest. Bloodstains were visible from the kitchen to the bedroom.

A licensed double-barrel gun was recovered from the scene. Indian Army veteran Paswan had reportedly retired from service and was working as a bank security guard.

Domestic dispute suspected

According to Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Vipin Tada, preliminary findings suggest a domestic dispute late Sunday night. Investigators believe Paswan shot his wife following an argument, after which his son rushed in and was also shot.

Paswan is suspected to have then locked the house from outside and later died by suicide on the railway track.

Probe under way

Forensic teams have collected blood samples, the weapon and CCTV footage. Police are examining all angles, including family and financial matters. Reports indicate Paswan had previously taken a loan of around Rs 12 lakh for his daughter’s wedding and house construction, which was allegedly repaid recently.

Meanwhile, Paswan’s brother has alleged foul play and demanded a thorough investigation.

Authorities said further action will depend on forensic findings and post-mortem reports.
