Love knows no boundaries, they say, but in this love story, love knows no gender.

Gaurav Sharma, an Indian classical dancer fell in love with Rizwan, a Pakistani over Facebook. Fearing that his love for Rizwan will not be accepted by the world, Gaurav took an extreme step of changing his gender to become Meera to live with his love!

Reformed and renamed as Meera, she now resides in Lucknow. A trained Kathak dancer, Meera has staged several shows in India as well as abroad and has penned down several books on Sufi poetry, classical music and dance.

Presently working on a research on the Lucknow gharana of Kathak, Meera met her lover Rizwan on Facebook in connection to work.

“The topic was related to Sufism which has always reasoned everything around me. He represents a Sufi school of thought too and was helping me understand the nuances for my work,” says Meera adding that without meeting him in persons, she felt that there was a spiritual connection between the two.

Rizwan proposed marriage and Meera accepted it. Soon, the two zeroed in on sex transplantation as a solution for their problem.

When Rizwan volunteered to undergo the surgery, Gaurav felt that if Rizwan is ready to change his identity for him then he could could do that Rizwan as well. Thus Gaurav became Meera.

Soon problems cropped up. Gaurav’s family was against this move and even Gaurav was plagued by the feeling of becoming a new person.

His sister, Mandakini Sharma, an accomplished dancer herself, stood by his decision. Soon, things started unfurling. With friends pitching in money for the surgery, plastic surgeon Dr Mithilesh Mishra and endocrinologist Dr Ameya Joshi started their job.

After 6 months of counseling, Gaurav was ready for his hormone therapy. Three surgeries took place in August, September and October and now Meera is eagerly awaiting Rizwan’s arrival to India in March, which will be their first meeting.
