The Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church in Kerala has launched an innovative campaign for eco-friendly Christmas celebrations, urging its parishes to adopt sustainable practices. The initiative, led by the church’s ecological commission under the theme “Christmas with All Creation,” emphasizes using recycled and locally sourced materials.
Parishes are encouraged to craft Christmas trees from worn-out items, create cribs using eco-friendly materials, and recycle used products for gifts. The commission has also announced prizes for the parishes that best implement these green directives.
Rev. V. M. Mathew, the commission convenor, stated, “Celebrations often harm the environment. This year, we aim to celebrate in harmony with nature.” He expressed hope that more churches will adopt similar eco-conscious measures in the future.
A comprehensive set of 14 guidelines has been issued, which includes replacing non-biodegradable decorations with sustainable alternatives, avoiding crackers and excessive lights, and incorporating eco-themed songs and speeches into Christmas carol events. Members are also advised to reduce vehicle use by opting for carpooling or public transport during the festive season.
In addition, the church calls for deeper community engagement by urging interactions with those affected by ecological exploitation, such as endosulfan victims.
This marks the first eco-driven initiative by the church, setting an example for sustainable festivities.
