In a pioneering move to promote eco-friendly waste management, Kerala has launched a state-wide campaign to collect electronic waste from households and institutions, starting Tuesday.
The initiative, led by the Local Self Government Department (LSGD), offers fixed prices for discarded gadgets and appliances, encouraging citizens to safely dispose of their e-waste instead of letting it pollute the environment.
Phase I of the campaign was officially inaugurated by LSGD Minister M B Rajesh at Neyyattinkara Municipality. The collection drive will initially cover municipalities and will be executed through Haritha Karma Sena members.
Clean Kerala Company Ltd will coordinate the effort and ensure scientific disposal of the collected e-waste. The state government has issued an order streamlining the process, aiming to make e-waste collection more regular and effective.
Currently, some local bodies conduct such drives only twice a year. With the new system, residents will have more opportunities and incentives to dispose of electronic waste responsibly.
Recyclable components of discarded items will be purchased at fixed rates, turning waste into a small financial reward for contributors, while protecting public health and reducing environmental damage from toxic materials.
Authorities hope the campaign will foster greater awareness of e-waste hazards and encourage participation across all sections of society.
