A 59-year-old man who had been trapped inside a hospital elevator in this city for two days was rescued Monday morning when the elevator was activated for routine maintenance, according to police.

Ravindran Nair (59), a resident of Ulloor, had entered the elevator in the OP Block of the government medical college on Saturday and found himself unable to exit when it unexpectedly descended instead of going up, officials said. Despite calling for help and having a non-functional phone, he remained unnoticed until the elevator was restarted by the operator on Monday morning.

Authorities became aware of the situation when the elevator’s operation on Monday morning revealed Nair’s presence inside. Concerned for his safety, Nair’s family had filed a missing person report with the medical college police the previous Sunday night.

Police clarified that Nair had visited the hospital for a medical examination prior to the incident.
