KOCHI: The prolonged and deeply divisive conflict over the mode of celebrating Holy Mass in the Ernakulam–Angamaly Archdiocese is now inching towards resolution, with key reforms set to take effect on July 3, observed as Indian Christian Day.
A recent meeting between Major Archbishop and Archdiocese Metropolitan Mar Raphael Thattil and Metropolitan Vicar Mar Joseph Pamplany reportedly resulted in consensus to implement the Syro-Malabar Synod-directed uniform mode of Mass. This Mass will now be celebrated in all churches on Sundays and holy days, at designated times between 5.30 am to 10:00 am and 3.30 pm to 6.00 pm.
This unified practice will also include the seven parishes that had already adopted the Synod-compliant Mass earlier.
In a significant move toward reconciliation, the 24 newly ordained priests — who had pledged not to conduct Mass facing the congregation — will now be allowed to do so, bringing them on par with the existing clergy.
Other key steps in the settlement include:
-
Withdrawal of the current curia in the Archdiocese
Revocation of disciplinary actions against priests who had opposed the Synod Mass
Replacement of administrators appointed to four foranes by Bishop Bosco Puthur
However, the implementation of Synod Mass in parishes with ongoing litigation will be deferred until court cases are resolved.
An official circular detailing all terms of the agreement is expected to be issued soon.
