Thiruvananthapuram: Health Minister Veena George has announced the rollout of a ‘Blood Bank Traceability Application’, a centralized digital platform that will provide real-time information on the availability of safe blood units across the state. The initiative aims to make blood availability transparent, efficient, and accessible to the public.
A public portal is also in the works and is expected to go live by year-end, enabling users to check for specific blood types from anywhere in Kerala. The initiative is part of a broader push to ensure 100% voluntary blood donation and strengthen the state’s blood safety infrastructure.
To bolster supply, blood banks and storage units have been established at all hospitals offering maternity services, beginning from community health centres. The Kerala Rare Blood Donor Registry has also been set up for rare blood types, complementing the traceability app.
The application tracks blood bags from collection to transfusion, ensuring uniform safety standards. The pilot project begins this month at Thiruvananthapuram General Hospital, with a statewide rollout planned within the year.
The project is being led by the Health Department in collaboration with K-DISC, Kerala State AIDS Control Society, Blood Transfusion Council, and e-Health Kerala. Integration of private blood banks into the system is also underway to provide a single unified dashboard of blood availability across Kerala.
