A 21-year-old maritime trainee from Chandanathope in Kerala’s Kollam district has been stranded aboard an Iranian cargo vessel near the Sharjah coast for nearly a month, raising serious concerns about his wellbeing and safety.
Distressing situation at sea
Akhimon M, who joined the Iran-based cargo vessel Queen Star, had travelled abroad in April last year after completing his training at the International Maritime Academy in Chennai. He had secured the placement through a recruitment agency based in Jaipur, hoping to begin a stable career in the maritime sector.
However, his family now alleges that he is facing severe hardship onboard. His mother, Rameeha Madhu, said the family last spoke to him four days ago, during which he reportedly expressed distress over lack of proper food and unpaid salary.
“He said he is struggling. They are not providing proper food or salary. He is our only son, and we feel completely helpless,” she said.
Family seeks urgent intervention
Deeply обеспокоены by his situation, the family has approached the shipowner and sought assistance from Kollam Member of Parliament N. K. Premachandran. The MP confirmed that he has taken up the matter with the Indian embassy in Iran.
While officials have indicated that the trainee is currently safe, uncertainty remains over when he will be able to return home. The prolonged delay and lack of clarity have added to the family’s anxiety.
Concerns over maritime employment practices
The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by young maritime workers placed through recruitment agencies. Issues such as delayed wages, poor living conditions, and limited communication continue to be reported in isolated cases, raising concerns about oversight and accountability.
