A 51-year-old printing worker in Varkala died in a tragic workplace accident on Saturday when her saree became entangled in a pinning machine, pulling her down and causing a fatal head injury. The incident has raised concerns over safety standards and protective measures in small-scale industrial units across Kerala.
A routine workday turns tragic
According to initial reports, the woman was operating a pinning machine in a local printing unit when her saree suddenly became trapped in the moving equipment. The force pulled her off balance, causing her to fall and sustain a severe head injury. Co-workers rushed to assist her and alerted emergency services, but she succumbed to her injuries before medical help could stabilise her.
The printing unit, located in the Varkala region of Thiruvananthapuram district, is known to employ several women workers. Colleagues described the victim as experienced and diligent, noting that the incident occurred within seconds, giving her no time to react.
