New Delhi: Opposition parties belonging to the INDIA bloc came together on Monday for a crucial meeting in the national capital, with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge outlining a series of political, economic and constitutional concerns that the alliance intends to raise against the BJP-led Central government.
The meeting, attended by leaders from 23 opposition parties, focused on strengthening coordination among alliance partners and formulating a joint strategy to counter the ruling government on issues ranging from electoral reforms and inflation to foreign policy and federal relations.
Addressing the gathering, Kharge emphasised the need for greater unity among opposition parties and highlighted what he described as challenges facing the country’s democratic institutions and economy.
Kharge highlights opposition unity
Beginning his address, Kharge welcomed leaders from across the opposition spectrum and reflected on the journey of the INDIA bloc since its formation nearly three years ago.
The Congress chief pointed to the alliance’s recent parliamentary coordination, particularly its collective opposition to key government legislation.
He said the opposition had demonstrated its strength and unity in Parliament by coming together against the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-first Amendment) Bill, the Delimitation Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill.
According to Kharge, that display of solidarity should now serve as the foundation for future political cooperation among alliance partners.
Electoral roll revision comes under scrutiny
One of the central issues raised by Kharge was the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The Congress president alleged that the exercise could adversely impact the voting rights of millions of citizens across the country.
He argued that concerns regarding voter registration and electoral participation required greater scrutiny and public discussion.
The issue has emerged as a key point of contention between opposition parties and the government, with the INDIA bloc expected to continue raising questions regarding electoral processes in the coming months.
Inflation and economy feature prominently
Kharge also focused heavily on economic issues, particularly inflation and rising living costs.
He claimed that prices of essential commodities continue to increase, placing pressure on households across the country.
According to the Congress leader, the economic environment remains challenging for ordinary citizens, with inflation affecting family budgets and purchasing power.
Opposition parties have repeatedly raised concerns about food prices, fuel costs and employment opportunities, positioning these issues as major areas of criticism against the government.
The meeting reflected a broader effort by the alliance to present economic concerns as a central political issue ahead of future electoral contests.
Opposition attacks use of agencies
Another major theme of Kharge’s address was the alleged misuse of investigative agencies.
The Congress president accused the government of using central agencies to target political opponents and create pressure on opposition leaders.
He further alleged discrimination against non-BJP state governments and claimed that constitutional institutions were facing increasing challenges.
Such allegations have been consistently raised by several opposition parties, while the government has rejected claims of political interference, maintaining that investigative agencies function independently within the framework of the law.
Foreign policy concerns raised
Kharge also touched upon foreign policy, alleging that India’s international engagement had become compromised under the current administration.
While he did not elaborate extensively on specific issues during his remarks, the opposition has previously questioned the government’s handling of diplomatic relations and regional challenges.
The INDIA bloc is expected to continue highlighting foreign policy matters as part of its broader political campaign against the BJP.
Key leaders attend meeting
The high-profile gathering saw participation from several prominent opposition leaders.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi attended the meeting.
Also present were Mamata Banerjee, accompanied by Abhishek Banerjee, along with Akhilesh Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also participated in the meeting.
Meanwhile, Uddhav Thackeray joined virtually.
DMK skips meeting amid alliance tensions
A notable absentee from the meeting was the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
The party decided not to attend following political developments in Tamil Nadu, where Congress aligned with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam led by actor-turned-politician Vijay.
Despite the absence, leaders from other alliance partners sought to downplay concerns about divisions within the opposition camp.
CPI(ML) leader Dipankar Bhattacharya stated that although DMK representatives were not present, the party remained aligned with the broader objectives of the opposition alliance.
Media briefing expected
Following the meeting, INDIA bloc leaders were expected to jointly address the media and outline the outcomes of their discussions.
The briefing is likely to provide greater clarity on the alliance’s strategy regarding Parliament, electoral issues and future political coordination.
With several state elections and national political developments on the horizon, opposition leaders view the meeting as an important step in maintaining unity against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.
Conclusion
The INDIA bloc meeting underscored the opposition’s attempt to consolidate its position on key national issues, including electoral reforms, inflation, governance and federal relations. While internal differences remain, particularly following the DMK’s absence, alliance leaders projected a message of unity and coordination. As political activity intensifies across the country, the opposition will seek to build on this platform to challenge the BJP on both parliamentary and public issues in the months ahead.
