Shimla: A major landslide disrupted traffic movement on the Dhalli–Sanjauli Bypass in Shimla on Thursday evening after a portion of a hillside collapsed, depositing large quantities of soil, rocks and uprooted trees onto the roadway. The incident brought vehicular movement to a complete halt, prompting authorities to close the route and launch immediate clearance operations.

The landslide occurred at around 5.15 pm when debris suddenly tumbled onto the bypass, blocking both lanes of the road and leaving commuters stranded. Officials said the collapse involved heavy soil, rocks and at least two uprooted trees that fell across the affected stretch.

Fortunately, no casualties, injuries or vehicle damage were reported in the incident.

Traffic suspended on key bypass route

The Dhalli–Sanjauli Bypass serves as an important route for commuters travelling through Shimla and adjoining areas.

Following the landslide, traffic movement was completely suspended from both directions as authorities assessed the situation and initiated safety measures. Motorists were forced to turn back or seek alternative routes to reach their destinations.

Police personnel were deployed to regulate traffic and prevent vehicles from entering the affected stretch.

Restoration work underway

Soon after the incident, teams from the Public Works Department (PWD), Kasumpti Division, reached the site with heavy machinery to begin clearing operations.

Officials commenced the removal of debris and the cutting and removal of fallen trees obstructing the road. Efforts are currently focused on restoring connectivity and ensuring the roadway is safe for public use.

Authorities said the duration required for complete restoration will depend on the volume of debris and prevailing weather conditions.

No casualties reported

Officials confirmed that no vehicles were caught in the landslide when the hillside gave way.

The absence of casualties has been attributed to the timely movement of traffic and the fact that the collapse occurred without directly impacting any passing vehicles.

Emergency services remained on standby as a precautionary measure while restoration activities continued.

Police issue safety advisory

Shimla Police has formally closed the Dhalli–Sanjauli Bypass until further notice and advised commuters to use alternative routes.

Authorities also warned that the hillside remains unstable and there is a possibility of additional debris falling onto the road. Residents and travellers have been urged to stay away from the affected area until clearance work is completed and the route is declared safe.

Police have appealed to the public to follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel through landslide-prone zones, particularly during periods of unstable weather.

Monsoon concerns grow in hill regions

The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of hill roads to landslides during the monsoon season and periods of heavy rainfall.

Authorities are closely monitoring other sensitive locations in and around Shimla to prevent similar incidents and ensure public safety. Residents have been advised to remain vigilant and report any signs of slope instability or falling debris to local authorities.

Restoration work is expected to continue until the bypass is fully cleared and traffic movement can safely resume.
