Lawyer detained in Patiala house violence released within 24-hours

New Delhi: Lawyer Vikram Chauhan, who was arrested by Delhi Police, was released on bail on Wednesday only 24-hours after being detained.

He was involved in thrashing journalists outside Patiala Court Complex and also boasting about how he beat up JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar in police custody in a sting video by India Today.

As per media reports, Chauhan said that there was no pressure on him. He said, “I am common man and I do not represent anyone. The media is trying to portray me as a goon. I am an Indian and if praising Mother India and saying ‘Vande Matram’ makes me a goon then so be it. Yes there are allegations against me but I’m sure I will be vindicated.”

According to police sources, Chauhan is booked in two separate cases.

The lawyer was leading a group of lawyers to assault on two occasions on February 15 and 17 which was caught on camera.

Chauhan had appeared before the police, six days after the police summoned him in the Patiala Court complex violence case. The public has been protesting over the police inaction, since Chauhan was the very prominent in the violence.

Chauhan involved in thrashing students, teachers of JNU and journalists on February 15 and then beating up journalists again on February 17.

Another lawyer Yashpal Singh who had appeared before the police after they summoned him was also released on bail.
