Lahore: Amir Hamza, a founding member of Lashkar-e-Taiba, was shot by unidentified gunmen in Lahore and is currently in critical condition, according to officials.
The incident occurred outside a news channel office, where attackers reportedly opened fire on Hamza. He sustained serious injuries and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains under intensive medical care.
Police launch search operation
A Lahore Police official confirmed that personnel responded swiftly to reports of firing near Hamdard Chowk. Authorities stated that unidentified assailants targeted a vehicle linked to the Chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurmat-e-Rasool Pakistan.
While other occupants of the vehicle were reported safe, Hamza was critically injured in the attack. Police have since issued a high alert across the area and launched search operations to trace those responsible.
Profile of Amir Hamza
Amir Hamza is considered a key figure in the formation and activities of Lashkar-e-Taiba, which he co-founded along with Hafiz Saeed. The organisation has been linked to multiple terror attacks, including incidents in India.
A veteran of the Afghan mujahideen, Hamza has been known for his speeches and writings promoting extremist ideology. He previously served as the editor of LeT’s publication “Majallah al-Daawa” and authored books including Qafila Da’wat aur Shahadat in 2002.
International sanctions and role
The United States Treasury Department has designated Lashkar-e-Taiba as a terrorist organisation and listed Hamza as a sanctioned individual. He is believed to have played a significant role in recruitment, fundraising, and negotiations for the release of detained militants.
Activities after crackdown
Following financial crackdowns by Pakistani authorities on LeT-linked organisations such as Jamaat-ud-Dawah and Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation in 2018, Hamza reportedly distanced himself from the group.
He later founded a splinter outfit, Jaish-e-Manqafa, which, according to reports, continued militant activities, including in Jammu and Kashmir. Sources suggest he remained in contact with elements of the Lashkar leadership.
Investigation continues
Security agencies are currently investigating the motive behind the attack, including whether it was linked to internal rivalries or other factors. No group has claimed responsibility so far.
Conclusion
The shooting of a senior militant figure like Amir Hamza highlights ongoing security challenges in the region. As investigations proceed, authorities are expected to focus on identifying the attackers and uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident.
