Tiruppur city police are investigating an unusual theft at a Tasmac liquor shop where a burglar stole alcohol worth ₹9,000 but left behind a large sum of ₹3.76 lakh in cash stored inside the outlet’s cash box.
The incident occurred at Tasmac outlet no. 1990, located on Sharmian Shakib Street, close to the Kalaignar Karunanidhi Central Bus Stand. On Wednesday morning, local traders noticed the shop’s lock was broken and its door ajar, prompting them to alert the Tiruppur South Police.
Responding swiftly, police and Tasmac authorities arrived at the scene. While inspecting the premises, officials confirmed that several liquor bottles were missing. However, the cash from the previous day’s sales, amounting to ₹3.76 lakh, remained untouched inside the cash box.
CCTV footage reviewed by police showed that the burglary occurred between 1.30 am and 2 am. The thief is seen bundling up bottles of alcohol and exiting the shop, seemingly unaware of the stash of money.
“He appears to have completely overlooked the cash box,” said an investigating officer. A case has been registered and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the suspect using the surveillance footage.
The incident has raised eyebrows and questions about the intruder’s motives—or lack of awareness.
