A man died by suicide while his live-in partner was left severely injured after a heated argument spiraled out of control at their rented residence in Guwahati.
The incident unfolded shortly after midnight in Kalyani Nagar, Kahilipara, on Wednesday. Police identified the deceased as Navjyoti Talukdar. His girlfriend, Sushmita Das, was rushed to Hayat Hospital in critical condition.
According to investigators, the couple had been living together for a year, but their relationship had grown increasingly volatile, marked by frequent arguments and misunderstandings.
Police said Navjyoti locked Sushmita inside a room before hanging himself. Despite her distress, Sushmita managed to alert authorities before she reportedly attempted to end her own life by slashing her wrist.
“A distress call was received, and our team reached the spot without delay. The man was found hanging inside the house. Sushmita Das, who works with a local news channel, was given immediate medical attention. We have registered a case and initiated a thorough probe,” a senior Guwahati police officer stated.
