A couple who married for love were allegedly threatened with gunfire and intimidation by the woman’s family members in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district on Thursday, triggering panic in the village and prompting police intervention.
Shots fired, motorcycle set ablaze
The incident occurred in Tola village under the Rawatpura Sarkar police station limits. According to police, the woman’s family members, along with a few villagers, surrounded the couple’s house and allegedly fired multiple rounds in the air. The attackers also set fire to a Splendor motorcycle parked outside the house.
The sudden gunfire created fear among residents and forced the couple to lock themselves inside their home to avoid harm.
Couple trapped inside house
Police sources said Swami Sharan Dubey had returned to his village in Tola with his wife when the confrontation took place. Around seven to eight people allegedly gathered outside their house during their stay.
Fearing for their lives, the couple bolted the doors and remained trapped inside as shots were fired outside. The incident reportedly continued for several minutes before the attackers fled.
Police rescue after delay
The Rawatpura Sarkar police reached the spot about 30 minutes after receiving information about the disturbance. By the time officers arrived, the accused had escaped.
Police safely rescued the couple from the house and shifted them to a secure location. A formal complaint has been registered based on the victim’s statement, and the burnt motorcycle was seized from the spot.
Love marriage behind the attack
Preliminary investigation suggests the attack was motivated by anger over a love marriage that took place around six months ago between the complainant’s son and a local woman. Police said resentment within the woman’s family escalated into threats and violence.
Officials confirmed that an investigation is underway and assured that strict action will be taken against those involved.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers couples face in parts of the country for choosing their partners, raising concerns over safety, honour-based intimidation, and delayed emergency response.
