A deeply moving story of loyalty has emerged from the snowbound hills of Bharmaur, where a pet dog stayed beside the body of its deceased owner for four days amid extreme cold and heavy snowfall.
The incident took place in Chamba district, where a man living in the high-altitude region reportedly died after prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures and snowfall. Due to harsh weather and difficult terrain, rescue teams and villagers were unable to reach the location immediately.
Dog refuses to leave owner’s side
When rescuers finally reached the spot four days later, they found the man’s body buried under layers of snow. Sitting beside him was his pet pit bull, which had refused to move from the spot despite blizzard-like conditions and biting cold.
According to locals, the dog neither ate food nor sought shelter during those four days. Battling freezing winds and snowstorms, it guarded the body continuously, protecting it from wild animals common in the mountainous region.
Rescue team faces resistance
When the rescue team attempted to retrieve the body, the dog initially became aggressive, believing the strangers had come to harm its owner. Officials said it took considerable time, gentle coaxing and reassurance before the animal finally understood that help had arrived.
Only after the dog stepped aside were the rescuers able to carry out their duty and recover the body for last rites.
