Gurugram: In a move aimed at easing cooking gas access amid supply concerns, an LPG ATM has been introduced in Gurugram, offering consumers a quick and automated way to refill cylinders within minutes.
The facility, installed in a residential township in Sector 33, Sohna, allows users to exchange empty cylinders for filled ones in just two to three minutes, marking a significant step towards modernising fuel distribution.
Pilot project by BPCL
The initiative has been launched by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) as part of a pilot project. It comes at a time when many parts of the country are witnessing LPG supply challenges and delays in cylinder delivery.
Officials said the LPG ATM aims to provide a faster, more convenient alternative to traditional home delivery systems, especially in urban areas where demand is high.
How the LPG ATM works
The automated vending system operates round the clock and follows a fully digital, contactless process.
Users are required to enter their registered mobile number and verify it through a one-time password (OTP). They then scan the barcode or QR code on their empty cylinder.
Once the verification is complete, users can make payments using digital methods such as UPI, credit or debit cards, and net banking. After successful payment, the machine dispenses a filled cylinder while retaining the empty one.
The entire process is designed to be completed within a few minutes, reducing waiting time and eliminating dependency on delivery schedules.
Use of lightweight composite cylinders
A key feature of the LPG ATM is the use of modern composite cylinders, which are significantly lighter than traditional metal ones.
While conventional LPG cylinders weigh around 31 kg when filled, the newer fibre-based cylinders weigh approximately 15 kg. This makes them easier to carry, particularly for elderly users and households without assistance.
Officials also noted that composite cylinders are corrosion-free, cleaner in appearance, and considered safer due to their material composition.
Capacity and supply management
The LPG ATM has a storage capacity of around 10 cylinders at a time. It is equipped with an automated alert system that notifies nearby agencies when stock levels fall below a certain threshold.
This ensures timely replenishment and reduces the chances of stockouts, making the system more reliable for regular users.
