Two sisters aged 22 and 24 died by suicide in the Para area of Lucknow on Thursday, with police suspecting that emotional distress over the deteriorating health of their pet dog may have played a role in the tragic incident.

According to police, the incident occurred in the limits of Para. The sisters were reportedly extremely attached to their German Shepherd dog, which had been suffering from a serious illness for a prolonged period. Despite being under medical treatment, the pet’s condition had been worsening, causing significant emotional strain.

No suicide note was recovered from the spot.

Family recounts events before collapse

Police said the sisters’ mother told investigators that she had sent her daughters to a nearby shop to buy groceries around 11 am. Shortly after they returned home, both women suddenly complained of illness and collapsed.

They were immediately rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared the elder sister dead on arrival. The younger sister was admitted for treatment but succumbed later the same evening.

Poison consumption suspected

Doctors informed the family that the sisters had allegedly consumed poison. During a subsequent search of the house, police recovered a bottle of phenyl from the women’s room, strengthening the suspicion of suicide.

Para police station inspector Suresh Singh said a detailed probe was underway to establish the exact sequence of events and circumstances leading to the deaths.

“We have been told that the two women were deeply distressed due to their ailing pet. The bodies have been handed over to the family after post-mortem. Further legal formalities are in progress,” the inspector said.

Mental health concerns noted

Police sources said the sisters were known to be reserved and mostly kept to themselves. Family members also informed investigators that both women had been dealing with certain mental health issues, though no formal medical records have yet been cited.

The family belongs to a modest background. The sisters’ father runs a small grocery store in the area, while their brother works as a property dealer.

Investigation continues

Police said they are recording statements from family members and neighbours as part of the investigation. Authorities have reiterated the importance of mental health awareness and timely support, especially in cases involving emotional trauma and attachment-related distress.
