Pimpri-Chinchwad: Authorities in Pimpri-Chinchwad have launched an inquiry after a woman claimed that a bedsheet purchased from a local religious fair carried a “Made in Pakistan” label, raising questions about how the product reached the market despite restrictions on imports from the neighbouring country.

The issue came to light after a video posted on social media went viral, prompting police and civic authorities to examine the matter.

Discovery made during routine washing

The woman, identified as Pooja Saraf, said she had purchased the bedsheet from a temporary fair organised near the Moraya Gosavi Temple during the Sankashti Chaturthi celebrations.

According to her, she had bought several household items from vendors at the fair and only noticed the label while preparing to wash the bedsheet at home.

In the viral video recorded in Marathi, Saraf displayed the tag attached to the product and expressed surprise at finding a label indicating that it had been manufactured in Pakistan.

She also voiced concern that many other visitors to the fair might have unknowingly purchased similar items.

Video gains attention online

The video quickly attracted attention on social media platforms, triggering discussions among users regarding the origin of products sold at temporary fairs and local markets.

Many users questioned how a product carrying a Pakistan-origin label could be available for sale, while others called for verification of the claim and investigation into the supply chain.

The incident has since become a subject of public discussion, particularly in the context of trade restrictions and import regulations.

Police initiate inquiry

Although no formal complaint has been filed by the woman, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police took cognisance of the viral video and initiated a preliminary inquiry.

Officials have reportedly formed a special team to verify the authenticity of the claim and trace the origin of the bedsheet.

Investigators are expected to examine whether the product was legally imported, routed through intermediaries or incorrectly labelled.

The inquiry will also focus on identifying the vendor from whom the item was purchased and determining how it entered the local market.

Civic authorities asked to inspect vendors

Police have reportedly sought assistance from the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation in examining vendors operating at the fair.

Municipal officials are expected to verify licences, inspect merchandise and take appropriate action if any violations of trade or consumer regulations are detected.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether similar products have been found with other vendors.

Consumer awareness highlighted

Expressing concern over the possibility that more such products may have been sold, Saraf urged consumers to be vigilant while making purchases.

She said many people attending the fair may have purchased bedsheets and other household items without checking product labels.

The incident has also sparked discussions about consumer awareness and the importance of examining product information before making purchases.

Investigation underway

Officials have emphasised that the inquiry is currently at a preliminary stage and that conclusions will only be drawn after verification of the product’s origin and distribution chain.

Authorities are expected to submit a report once inspections are completed and the source of the bedsheet is identified.

The outcome of the investigation may help determine whether the case involves a regulatory violation, a labelling issue or a legitimate supply-chain explanation.
